Launched in 2020, the guaranteed basic income pilot pools COVID-19 relief funds and philanthropic dollars to offer $5,100 to 1,000 San Antonio families over two years. Highlighting the concept of trust in this program, Frances Gonzales, AFN Senior Director, says, “think about the opportunity to have a cash assistance program that says ‘Hey, we trust you, and we know and respect what issues you have and we know that you will do what you need to do to get your family to the next level.’” With a goal of developing a permanent basic income program, research findings from this pilot will be key to sustain the program beyond 2023.
