Heir’s Property and Homeownership in Dallas/Fort Worth

What is the prevalence of heirs property in North Texas? How does heirs’ property ownership contribute to housing instability and barriers to generational wealth transfer in our region?

Heirs’ property is the term for land and houses that are passed down to multiple family members via informal inheritance, often across multiple generations. Recognizing that heirs’ property, which disproportionately occurs in communities of color and low-wealth families, impacts the racial wealth gap, generational wealth transfers, and community and neighborhood resilience, the North Texas Asset Funders Network invested in groundbreaking new research identifying the prevalence of heirs’ properties in North Texas.

Join us on October 9, 2024 for a special briefing to learn about the findings from this new research and discuss opportunities for action to preserve family wealth in North Texas. The briefing will share insights into:

  • understanding the prevalence of homeowners with heirs’ property;
  • the extent to which homeowners are not fully accessing homestead exemptions;
  • the impact this has on their housing stability and the region’s wealth gap;
  • as well as a discussion with funders and nonprofit organizations from around the State of Texas, sharing best practices and promising policy and programmatic interventions.
