Regional Event in Central Texas

Central Texas AFN Power Building Learning Series

You are invited to join Central Texas AFN for a funder only two-part learning series exploring investing in power building taking place August 30 and October 25 in Austin.

The Central Texas AFN chapter has identified power building as one primary area to learn and explore how it could support their vision of centering underserved, underrepresented, and historically marginalized communities in the chapter’s work. The Lead Local Collaborative Research Project defines power building as: “…the set of strategies used by communities most impacted by structural inequity to develop, sustain, and grow an organized base of people who act together through democratic structures to set agendas, shift public discourse, influence who makes decisions, and cultivate ongoing relationships of mutual accountability with decision makers that change systems and advance health equity.”

Grantmakers in Texas are invited to attend the series in Austin (preferred) or virtually. The series is being developed with thought partnership from Workers Defense and BASTA and will include peer to peer funder discussions on power building grantmaking and sharing in Texas.

The first learning session, to be held on Wed, Aug 30 from 3:30-5pm will focus on foundational education and defining power and power building. There will be a peer to peer component to hear how another funder has integrated power building into their grantmaking portfolio. It will be hosted at Indeed’s offices in Austin.

The second learning session, to be held on Wed, Oct 25 from 3:30-5pm will focus on exploring who in Texas is engaging in power building, who are the grassroots leaders and efforts philanthropy should be aware of, and it will include a deep dive into understanding 501c4s. We will also facilitate a peer to peer discussion on how funders across the AFN regions in Texas could share information on power building. It will be hosted at UWATX’s offices in Austin.
