Philip Fitzgerald is Chief Impact Officer of the Philadelphia Foundation, one of the first community foundations in the nation. Phil has spent his career building cross-sector partnerships to address the region’s most critical challenges and opportunities, with particular expertise in expanding economic mobility and strengthening community investment.
Phil joined the Philadelphia Foundation as Chief Impact Officer in March 2025, charged with growing the scale and effectiveness of philanthropy devoted to the region’s residents. His focus on fostering collaborative solutions and deploying resources for measurable impact has been a hallmark of his career in both the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors. In this newly created role, he leads initiatives that bring together corporate, civic, nonprofit, government, and community stakeholders to create sustainable community solutions, with particular emphasis on economic mobility, community safety, and youth development.
Prior to his current role, Phil served as Senior Vice President and Senior Program Officer at Citi Foundation, where he led the Community Progress Makers initiative, successfully deploying over $50 million in flexible funding to support community organizations driving economic opportunity across the United States. His earlier tenure with Philadelphia Foundation spanned eight years, including serving as Executive Director of Grantmaking, during which he oversaw discretionary grantmaking, scholarships, private foundation services, and special initiatives. His leadership in creating and implementing a new grantmaking framework in 2017 significantly enhanced PF’s impact in the community.
Phil’s commitment to community development extends through his earlier roles managing corporate giving and community outreach programs for VILLA and overseeing a grantmaking and capacity building initiative at Nonprofit Finance Fund. His career began in education, preparing adult learners for high school equivalency exams and teaching English to speakers of other languages both in the US and abroad, reflecting his longstanding dedication to expanding opportunities and access for all.
Active in both local and national initiatives, Phil serves on the boards of Asset Funders Network and Philadelphia Health Partnership. He holds dual MBAs in International Business Administration from Temple University’s Fox School of Business and École des Ponts Business School, as well as a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in International Area Studies with a minor in French from Drexel University. A graduate of West Catholic High School, Phil maintains deep roots in the Philadelphia community, where he continues to work toward creating lasting positive change in the region.
