The Savers Match: Helping More Americans Successfully Save for Retirement
According to recent AARP research, just over half of American households have access to workplace retirement savings. Not only do millions of American workers lack access to workplace retirement plans but many more lack the ability to meaningfully contribute to their retirement. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), 49% of adults ages 55 to 66 had no personal retirement savings in 2017. And, retirement savings are more stark when viewed through the lens of the racial and gender wealth gaps. The U.S. federal Savers Match, created in 2022 is a federal government matching contribution that will be effective in 2027 and is estimated to increase retirement savings for eligible savers by as much as 50%. Nearly 22 million savers are already eligible and making qualified contributions for this match. But millions more could benefit from the Saver’s Match. Please join Asset Funders Network in partnership with Pew Charitable Trusts to explore:
-
What is the savers match, who is eligible, and how can it effectively support much-needed retirement savings for American workers?
-
What can we do operationally to educate and prepare American workers to benefit from the savers match?
-
What can philanthropy and other sectors do now to support and maximize successful implementation of the savers match?
-
What can philanthropy and other sectors do now to support those whose retirement is imminent?
Stakeholders can work together to make sure that all eligible constituents can understand and claim the Saver’s Match and thoughtfully design the Match for ease and simplicity to form creative pathways for American workers to safely and effectively save for retirement.
