Bay Area: Poverty and Health Contra Costa Perspectives & Innovations
Thanks to innovations in the public health field, it’s clear that family income and assets strongly correlate to health outcomes. When people are living in poverty, their health suffers on a number of levels. Beyond availability of health insurance, social factors such as access to employment or the quality of the built environment play a role in individual health, chronic disease and life expectancy.
The Bay Area is a leader in developing innovative, cross-cutting work incorporating both health and wealth strategies. At this convening, we highlighted the work in Contra Costa, and sparked a conversation about how to build on it, by bringing together nonprofit organizations, public sector staff and funders.
At this event, we heard from Contra Costa leaders who are working on this issue in a variety of contexts. Following the panel, we invited participants to discuss the opportunities to bridge interests and cross silos to make stronger connections between economic security and health outcomes.
