Bay Area: Guaranteed Income: A Silver Bullet to Reduce Poverty? August 15, 2019

In recent years guaranteed income initiatives such as Universal Basic Income (UBI) have garnered national attention. The topic has been elevated in the national discourse by potential presidential candidates as part of their economic platforms.

Several policymakers, researchers, and practitioners are lifting up guaranteed income without means-testing or work requirements as a promising strategy to address poverty. Pilots all around the U.S. have begun to sprout up including here in the Bay Area. The Mayor of Stockton, Michael Tubbs, launched the first city-level guaranteed income pilot in the U.S. in 2018 with funding from the Economic Security Project. Beyond city level funding, guaranteed income is now being piloted for specific populations, like pregnant mothers, in an effort to address the racial health inequities of pregnancy outcomes.

Directly addressing income insecurity city-wide, or for specific populations to address health equity, is a largely untapped opportunity for funders. Join us for a panel discussion that will address critical questions about guaranteed income:

  • How can funders support this work?
  • How are current guaranteed income pilots faring in California?
  • How can these cash supports be used effectively to address the health-wealth connection?
  • In what ways is guaranteed income being used to address equity?
