Older women who have worked their entire lives, both in the workforce and/or as family caregivers, find themselves struggling to meet even their most basic needs as they become older. They are at risk of developing significant health problems, falling into poverty, losing their homes, or even becoming homeless. Women overall are 80% more likely to be impoverished in retirement than men and over 4 million older women (65+) in the US are currently living in poverty. This session on July 7, 2021 explored the systemic and structural causes of senior women’s economic insecurity including the legacy effect of the wage gap on retirement benefits; effect of caregiving; debt and financial exploitation as well as targeted and replicable strategies, policies, and system changes that can help ensure that senior women not only survive but thrive as they age. Philanthropy is uniquely situated to influence and develop interventions to support the economic security of senior women and ensure this generation and future generations can age financially secure and with dignity.
