Nicky Charles brings more than 15 years of nonprofit and education leadership to The Pew Charitable Trusts, where she serves as Senior Officer overseeing the growth grant portfolio for health and human service organizations.

Before joining Pew, Nicky was Chief Operating Officer of the Durham Children’s Initiative and worked as an independent consultant supporting philanthropic and direct service organizations. She also served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Executive Director for the School District of Philadelphia’s former governing body, the School Reform Commission.

A proud graduate of Howard University and the University of Pennsylvania, Nicky has taught multiple grade levels and held leadership roles in K–12 schools. Her passion is tackling the systemic barriers that prevent equitable outcomes for children and youth. For Nicky, the work isn’t just about equity—it’s about justice.

Nicky is an alum of Leadership Triangle, LeadBoston, and the Philadelphia Leadership programs. She’s been a dedicated “Big” with Big Brothers Big Sisters since 2011, mentors women in transition, and serves on the boards of Village of Wisdom, Integrated Impact, and the Dudley Flood Center for Educational Equity and Opportunity Finance Committee.
When she’s not at work, you’ll likely find Nicky exploring a museum, salsa dancing, or attending a concert or art exhibit. She’s a foodie who balances her love of travel and Haribo gummy bears with training at the 360 Approach and on her Peloton, and she keeps her knees strong enough for the occasional road race. Fun fact: Nicky’s first language is German!
