AFN’s Members Making Impact: Case Studies for Change & Innovation is a series that spotlights peer-driven investment strategies fueling systemic and policy change across AFN’s eight issue areas.

Founded in 1976 by Sam and Nancy Gary, Gary Community Ventures is an impermanent philanthropic organization committed to using all of its resources by 2035 to transform systems and build wealth for Colorado kids and families. Having built his fortune in oil and gas, Sam established the organization with the belief that business, philanthropy, and policy must play a role in improving outcomes for children and families. Over time, Gary Community Ventures adapted its organizational structure to reflect that belief. Today, the organization deploys a combination of grantmaking, venture creation, impact investing, and policy and advocacy to advance school readiness, youth success, and family economic mobility across Colorado.
