Reimagining the Care Economy from Birth Equity to Elder Care

Bay Area AFN is presenting this session at the Southern California Grantmakers 2026 Public Policy Conference: Unify and Mobilize on April 16 in Los Angeles.

California families are navigating rising costs and shrinking supports across every stage of life. Federal cuts to Medicaid, child care, and safety net programs are worsening an already fragile care infrastructure. Amid these challenges, California’s guaranteed income pilots, care advocacy, and cross-sector partnerships have generated evidence of political will to build care structures that are more durable and just.

This session will utilize a fishbowl structure to explore two conversations focused on building a more holistic care infrastructure. The first fishbowl will elevate lessons from two pioneering GI programs—the California Abundant Birth Project and LA BOOST—and discuss how cash strengthens health outcomes and workforce pathways. The second will explore policy and movement building spanning child care and elder care.

Together, funders will identify common ground, align narratives, and develop actionable strategies to mobilize philanthropy behind a unified, durable care movement in California.
